Bluff Manufacturing has become a leading provider of steel and aluminum ramps, portable yard ramps and warehouse safety equipment to companies through out the North America. Our long-standing commitment to the highest quality and outstanding customer service has helped to sell our “dock solutions products” to companies both small and large, including Ford, FedEx, General Motors, Kraft and Exxon.
Bluff Manufacturing began as a local company in 1968, manufacturing its ramps, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The company expanded to serve the Southwest region and eventually the entire U.S. along with Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. We attribute our continued growth and success to fundamental principles:
One of the ways we have grown is by constant improvement of our product. Our manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, processes a massive tonnage of raw materials, both steel and aluminum, to produce our wide range of products:
Bluff Manufacturing prides itself on being an incentive based shop, which means that each employee involved in the production process of a Bluff dock boards, yard ramps, dock levelers and safety products are paid not only based on production, but is also held accountable for the quality. Therefore, our manufacturing staff is very competent and our turnover rate is extremely low. It is for these reasons that Bluff products have almost zero defects over time.

One of the ways we have achieved long-term success is by constant improvement of our product. Our manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, processes a massive tonnage of raw materials, both steel and aluminum, to produce our wide range of products:
Bluff Manufacturing prides itself on being a piece-rate shop, which means that each employee involved in the production process of a Bluff yard ramp or portable dock is paid not only based on production, but is also held accountable for the quality. Therefore, our manufacturing staff is very competent and our turnover rate is extremely low. It is for these reasons that Bluff products have almost zero defects over time.
Safety is also very important at Bluff Manufacturing – both for our employees and customers. In our design, testing and application of yard ramps and portable loading dock s we always ask ourselves, “Is it safe?” Bluff Manufacturing is the only company to adhere to the ANSI MH30.2 standard, a rigorous testing process to ensure the highest quality products.
Our success is also measured by delivery time and meeting deadlines. Unlike other manufacturers that quote delivery times of 4 to 6 weeks, Bluff’s streamlined operations and 12 distribution centers allow us to quote in terms of working days. If an item is in stock and ordered by 3:00 p.m., it can be picked up next day by a freight company or the customer. The stock scenario is managed to meet 80 percent of customer needs. Non-stock standard products can typically be built and delivered in 5 working days, and customized products can typically be done in 21 working days. Most importantly, once the delivery date is quoted, we will do everything in our power to meet, or beat, the deadline. During 2007, our on-time delivery rate was 99.87 percent. We know that time is money.

Only Loading Dock Manufacturer to Raise Industry Safety and Performance Standards
Bluff Manufacturing remains the industry’s only manufacturer of portable loading dock equipment compliant with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system throughout the U.S.
Spearheaded by Bluff Manufacturing in 2007, in conjunction with the Material Handling Industry of America’s (MHIA) and Loading Dock Equipment Manufacturers (LODEM) trade associations, the ANSI MH30.2 Standard outlines mechanical and structural design guidelines along with usage, operation and maintenance standards for portable loading dock equipment.
According to Clark Smith, president of Bluff Manufacturing, the company recognized the need for a standard to ensure safety and empower customers to make better buying decisions about portable loading dock equipment. In the past, manufacturers used the same sources for steel and aluminum, but that changed when domestic sources disappeared. Replaced by foreign sources with differing standards and qualities, products have become vastly different.
Since its adoption, Bluff Manufacturing set out to conform to the ANSI MH30.2 Standard and to-date, is the only company to manufacture and test all aluminum dock plates, aluminum dock boards and steel dock boards to meet the ANSI MH30.2 criteria. In working with the Saginaw Valley State University’s Engineering Department, Bluff Manufacturing created a large hydraulic test stand to stress products and determine handling capacities.
In addition to the test for overall strength, as has been a longstanding practice for dock board manufacturers, the standard incorporates a test which sets limits for deflection of product while under load. This test ensures the integrity of the slope of the ramp; loss of shape will result in grades which may not be usable for certain equipment.
“The testing process is elaborate, but confirms material quality and product durability which is critical to the end-user,” states Smith. “The ANSI MH30.2 Standard improves safety and performance for customers and we strongly believe it is important for the entire industry to deliver compliant products. Not only does the ANSI MH30.2 standard speak to the quality of our products, but also our reputation.”
